A COMPACT ELECTRONIC UNIT FOR USE WITH SCINTILLATION DETECTORS (The Harwell 2000 Series Type 2179)

The electronic equipment used with a scintillation detector usually comprises a head amplifier adjacent to the detector, a general purpose main amplifier and a general purpose EHT generator. Such a system of units is ideal for experimental work where the type of detector is liable to be changed, but in many applications this flexibility is unnecessary and a less costly and complicated system can be used. This paper describes a relatively inexpensive unit, combining the main functions of the system, but designed to meet the specific needs of Nal(Tl) scintillation detectors. A particular feature of the design is that no amplifier adjacent to the detector is required, the only coupling to the detector being a single coaxial cable whose length is not critical.
