Effects of Surface Coatings on the Plastic Deformation of Metal Single Crystals: Progress Report for the Period 15 May 1965 to 15 February 1966

This project is concerned with classifying and explaining on a theoretical basis certain effects produced by the presence of a surface coating on a metal crystal which is undergoing plastic deformation. Even very thin, fragile coatings can produce rather spectacular increases in the strength of metals. During this period, progress has been made in several experimental areas. Of primary concern was the development of techniques for the preparation of large numbers of metal single crystals of the required orientations. Handling techniques and dislocation etch pitting procedures were developed.
