The specimen is dissolved, behind adequate shielding, in a mixture of ferric nitrate and nitric acid. A portion of the solution produced is diluted to a suitable concentration for the determination of plutonium/uranium ratio and isotopic abundance by the method of P.G. Report 340(W).nAnother portion is diluted and the uranium extracted into a mixture of tributyl phosphate and odorless kerosene. The extract is washed with a solution of ferrous sulphamate and nitric acid, and then the uranium is back extracted into water. This solution requires further treatment by the method of P.G. Report 698(W).
