Uranium monocarbide has recently received considerable at¬tention as a nuclear fuel because of its very desirable high-temperature properties, and it has good irradiation stability.nSeveral studies were conducted to determine ways of produc¬ing satisfactory pellets of uranium monocarbide. It was found that densification by cold pressing is dependent upon the pow¬der particle size, oxygen content, sintering temperature and atmosphere, and the lubricant used in pressing.nCertain sintering promoters were investigated. The addition of approximately 0.5% nickel was found to enhance densifi¬cation, and an average density of 97% of theoretical was ob¬tained when 2 wt % uranium disilicide was used under the proper conditions.
