Oxygen and hydrogen can exist, essentially, in three forms in sodium:oxide, hydroxide and hydride. The role played in corrosion by these two elements is different depending on the form in which they occur. For example, the influence of oxygen is not necessarily the same when it is in the form of the oxide or the hydroxide.nAt present the determination of the impurities, hydrogen and oxygen, is generally limited to their respective totals. Moreover, in certain methods currently used for the determination of oxygen, the presence of hydride or hydroxide introduces an error into the calculation of the oxygen level. It therefore seemed of value to us to develop methods for selectively determining the levels of sodium oxide, hydroxide and hydride, and this constitutes the first part of our work.
