Hydro A Small, Water-Cooled, and Water-Reflected Neutron Source

This report describes the general mechanical design, operation, and applications of Hydro, a small critical assem¬bly machine used as a service tool for the Los Alamos Scien¬tific Laboratory. It is portable and remotely operated. Methods are described for obtaining certain nuclear parameters for exponential columns and for intercomparing the fission 235 233 239 spectra of U235, U233, and Pu239.Also, the production of high energy neutrons by Hydro makes it particularly suited for radiochemical calibrations. The machine is, in effect, a small "source reactor" capable of running at power levels up to 12 kW.
