摘要

At the present early stage of development for large isotope heat sources, the principal interest is in the determination of: those items essential to the ultimate devel opent of the heat source;basic technology to reduce the lead time upon selection of a particular mission;and technology that will be generally applicable inde pendent of the final mission. The path of this development is affected by the con siderations of safety, heat source design, re-entry protection, fuel capsule design, emergency cooling, shielding, and various mission factors as summarized herein.
