The energy straggling distributions of non-relativistic heavy particles travelling through a homogeneous absorber have been determined for energy losses up to about 85% of the initial energy. Included are single collision distributions for very small energy losses. The distributions are found to be most symmetrical at energy losses of about 50%. Their asymmetry increases noticeably towards large energy losses. The calculations are valid for initial energies up to about 30% of the particle rest energy. The lower energy limit is determined by the importance of the inner shell corrections to the stopping power which have been neglected in this treatment. Within these energy limits the results apply to any absorber element throughout the periodic system.
