THE SOLUBILITIES OF TRANSITION METALS IN LIQUID ALKALI AND ALKALINE EARTH METALS, LANTHANUM AND CERIUM - A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE LITERA¬TURE

A critical review of the literature on solubilities of transition metals in liquid alkali and alkaline earth metals, cerium, and lanthanum-is presented. The work of each investigator is described and his results are given. Solubility data are -presented in graphical form as plots of log X vs l/T, where X is the mol fraction of solute metal in the liquid metal solution, and partial molal heats of solution for the solute metals are calculated. Con¬clusions are presented where warranted by the existing data. Effects of impurities on solubilities of solute metals in liquid metals are discussed and some conclusions are reached from the available data. Those areas in which further research is most urgently needed are outlined.
