Preparation of High Density Graphite by Hydrostatic Pressing

Graphite pieces were made by hydrostatically pressing a thermosetting plastic bonded mix and processing the pressings through a 2500°C graphitizing treatment. Pressings made with 85 parts graphite flour and 15 parts Thermax bonded with 27.5 pph Varcum had densities around 1.8 g/cc and compressive strengths around 9000 psi.nThis investigation included the use of different filler materials, binders, and processing variables in an attempt to optimize density and strength.
