摘要

The nuclear mechanical and radiological behavior of the SNAPTRAN-2 reactor when subjected to a rapid reactivity addition of 5-1 dollars is described. The total energy release was limited to 54 MW-sec primarily by the thermally induced negative reactivity feedback characteristic of the zirconium-hydride-uranium fuel. Rapid core expansion caused by hydro¬gen pressure buildup took place when the fuel temperature reached 1900°F. During dispersal of the burning fuel and hydrogen approximately 20% of the fission products was released to the atmosphere. Radiological measure¬ments indicated that the potential six-hour accumulative gamma exposure resulting from the test was less than 10 R at 100 meters from the reactor.
