MULTIMILLION KILOWATT HTGR A DESALINATION REACTOR SCALEUP STUDY

This study consisted of an evaluation of the technical feasibility of the scaleup of the High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in a size range up to 10,000 Mw(t). The HTGR system described in the TARGET design report was used as a starting point for this feasibility study. In addition, capital cost trends were evaluated, particularly as they relate to the practicality of the designs being studied.nThe major work in this study was the evaluation of the nuclear steam supply portion of two larger HTGR plants operating at 5,000 Mw(t) and 10,000 Mw(t) to determine what design or construction limitations might exist to limit feasibility, and a determination of the relationship between reactor size and power cost, in a scaleup from TARGET.
