Work was done to establish a procedure for preparing sintered W-25Re and W-Re-Mo alloy sleeves for use as tube-extrusion blanks. Minus 325 mesh commercially pure metal powders having particle sizes ranging from 1 to 5 microns (Fisher subsieve) were sintered in H2 or vacuum at temperatures ranging from 1, 500° to 3, 000° C. The results of this work showed that W-25Re and W-29.45Re-18.2Mo (W-25Re-30Mo, atomic percent) can be dry blended and sintered at 2,400° C to reproducibly obtain sleeves free of second phase and with consistent composition, density, and grain size. The results also showed that W-35.3Re-18.2Mo mixtures similarly processed occasionally resulted in sleeves having traces of sigma phase.
