Application of the Mossbauer Effect in Determination of Phase Diagrams

This thesis evaluates the use of the Mossbauer effect in determin¬ing phase diagrams. The nickel-gold system was selected as the basis for this study because it is well known, and corroborative data were obtained by standard x-ray diffraction techniques. Fe57 was the Mossbauer isotope used.nThe Mossbauer spectra were obtained for one-phase quenched-in specimens over the composition range from 2 5 to 100 atom percent nickel, and a temperature range from 4.5 to 7 00°K. From these spectra, calibration curves were made of the variation in Mossbauer parameters with composition.
