CAVITATION NUCLEATTON BY ENERGETIC PARTICLES

Some recent work on neutron induced cavitation is reported. A brief description is given of the apparatus used to generate a high amplitude ultrasonic field, and of the electronic system. In addition to experiments using an isotope source of neutrons (both slow and fast), some preliminary work with a pulsed D-T generator is described.nThe problem of nucleation by radiation is discussed and the differences between bubble chambers (where Seitz's theory has been applied with considerable success) and cavitation are outlined. An alternative approach which becomes identical with Seitz's theory for the positive pressure bubble chamber case is considered. Agreement with existing experimental data is improved, but remains quantitatively poor.
