A consistently sensitive thermoluminescent lithium borate has been made by melting a molecular proportioned mixture of boric acid and lithium carbonate in an argon atmosphere. The material is twice as sensitive as the commercially available product.nLithium borate requires no heat treatment after read-out and before re-use and its dose response to y radiation in the energy range 17 keV - 100 Iced is within 10% of tissue equivalent. By simple modifications to the reading unit, the total background arising from the heating of undoped powder is only 3-4 Mrad. In neutron free areas there are clear technical advantages in the use of lithium borate for the measurement of 0y and Y doses.
