摘要

A trade-off study of cylindrical and modular cores has been made in order to determine the relative merits of each type. The cores compared are optimized to be as realistic as possible. However, they are all unrodded and unmoderated so the effect of these materials is not included. Among items considered are fuel cycle economics, breeding and safety, for both credible and hypothetical accidents.nThe results of the trade-off indicate the existence of a definite advantage of the cylindrical core over the modular design in the areas of fuel cycle costs, breeding and mechanical design. The fuel cycle costs for the cylindrical core are approximately 0.3 mill/kwh less than for the optimum modular core. Compound doubling time of the cylindrical core is approximately two-thirds that of the modular core.
