PERSONNEL DOSE ASSESSMENTS FOLLOWING ACCIDENTAL NON-UNIFORM IRRADIATION OF THE BODY

The report describes the reconstruction of an incident which involved the accidental exposure to external radiation of two men on the floor of the experimental fast reactor at D.E.R.E. The reconstruction, carried out in order to determine the radiation doses received by the two men, necessitated the filming of stages in the incident operation using a dummy source, the measurement of the dose-rate distribution around an irradiated fuel element and its simulation using 137 Cs point sources, the measurement of the dose-rate distribution around a man-phantom containing 137CsCl2 solution and the measurement of depth doses in a water phantom irradiated by a fuel element.nThese experimental measurements enabled the determination of doses to the men's eyes, gonads, hands and skin, and also the distribution of dose with depth at the waist level of one of the men. By making use of the reciprocal dose theorem, the integral doses and average doses to the bodies of the men were also determined.
