Characterization of Commercial Refractory Metal and Metal Carbide Powders

Practical application of various mixing theories and powder characterization data has been extremely limited over the years. The problems associated with development of a suitable powder procurement specification have complicated matters still further.nRecent developments at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) show that a variety of morphological types of structure are obtainable as a result of the manufacturing processes employed and that more than one type of structure can result from the same manufacturing process. Four basic morphological types of structures have been identi¬fied for the powders examined to date, and their influence on final properties have been evaluated. It is felt that the development work described in this paper consti¬tutes a breakthrough for better understanding of the practical application of powder characterization data. Significant to this work is the fact that, with the aid of morphology, one can indeed develop a procurement specification for a powder to meet a particular requirement.
