摘要

The resistance of lead-shielded, radioactive material containers to crushing when impacted on flat essentially unyielding surfaces was investigated experimentally with small, partial-cask models. Models of both cubic and cylindrical shape were tested with inner and outer shells of mild steel and shielding of chemical or antimonial lead. Outer shell thickness of these was varied. A few cylindrical models with a rounded bottom edge were included. In addition, tests were performed on two cylindrical models of all-steel construction. Data were obtained on external deformation and reduction of shielding in the impacted region and on loss of volume of the inner cavity. Procedures are described for applying these model-generated data to the design of full-size containers.
