THE USE OF THICK STEEL WRAPPER PLATES FOR LARGE LEAD FILLED FLASKS, WHICH COULD OBVIATE THE NEED FOR SPECIAL THERMAL SHIELDS

This report describes experimental work with thick steel slabs backed up by lead and indicates the conditions under which lead melting will not take place in the fire test. The experimental work is confirmed by a computer programme which shows the effects of mill scale and other modifying effects. Calculations are offered showing that this method of construction can be reasonably economical.
