摘要

This report describes the results of a program designed to deter mine the economic feasibility of controlling microbial growth in emulsion-type cutting oils by using Microbial Inhibition Systems Employing Radiation (MISER). A detailed microbiological examination of contaminated cutting oil samples obtained from representative industrial systems was made and interpreted. Information collected from numerous industrial contacts, the literature, and from Atlantic Richfield Company marketing people served as a basis for presenting cost, calculations on the MISER and biocide approaches to the problem.nMicrobiological examination of 26 samples of contaminated cutting oil revealed that the microorganisms (bacteria) belonging to the genus Pseudomonas were present in greatest numbers. Bacteria belonging to the genera, Escherichia, Aerobacter, and Paracolobactrum were also found to be present in significant numbers. Anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria (genus Desulfovibrio) were found to be present in all but two of the cutting oil samples. These latter microorganisms are responsible for the "Monday morning odor" experienced by many industrial users. Yeast and molds were present only in small numbers or not at all.
