THE PREPARATION OF PLUTONIUM-238 DIOXIDE MICROSPHERES BY THE SOL-GEL PROCESS

The preparation of plutonium-238 dioxide microspheres by the sol-gel process was evaluated. This pro¬cess requires three major operations:the preparation of an aqueous sol, the removal of water to give a solid gelled microsphere, and the calcination of the gelled microsphere at I200°C. Reproducible sols and microspheres were obtained on a laboratory scale, and various experimental parameters were studied.
