A deliberate effort was made to be conservative in selecting for each site the proportion of deaths in which regrowth of the primary lesion was a significant part of the terminal phase of the disease. For example, only 40% of the total annual death rate due to carci¬noma in the head and neck region was attributed to regrowth in that region. The numbers of fail¬ures listed are based on intuition because data are not available for the stage distribution of each of the major tumor sites.
