AN ANALYSIS OF REPORTED BOILER EXPLOSIONS AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE SAFETY OF PRESSURE VESSELS

Within the described limitations and criteria for the analysis of reported boiler explosions, it is suggested that:-n(i) there is an increasing trend in the number of failures during the review period 1950-1965, but there is insufficient data to relate this to the overall populationn(ii) the majority of failures are due to overheating, water shor¬tage or over pressuren(iii) tube failures are the common cause of trouble whereas shell rupture is infrequentn(iv) the probable time for failure is during the early stages of service life.
