摘要

The Omega West Reactor (OWR) is a thermal, heterogeneous, tank-type research reactor operated by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. The reactor is light-water moderated and cooled, and utilizes aluminum-clad fuel elements of the Materials Testing Reactor (MTR) type. The OWR was originally operated at a power level of 5 MW thermal. In 1968, after 9 yr of operation at 5 MW, the normal operating power level was increasednto 8 MW. At this level, the reactor provides fluxes of up to 8 xn1013nneutrons/cm^-sec in the accessible experimental facilities. The OWR was designed primarily as a research machine, but it also serves as a test facility in support of the Laboratory's programmatic activities.nThis report describes the reactor, its auxiliary systems, and its mode of operation as of May 1969. The operating history is covered, as well as the details of additions and modifications made since initial construction.nAlso included in this report are the results of a recent 1-yr sur¬vey of the meteorological conditions at the reactor site. These results are combined with a revised model of the maximum credible accident to present a complete reevaluation of the extent of the possible accident hazards. It is shown that the OWR complies with the site requirements of 10 CFR 100.
