ANALYSIS OF IRRADIATED ZIRCONIUM CLAD THORIUM TUBES

Four irradiated and two unirradiated zirconium clad thorium tubes were dissolved and analyzed for uranium and thorium. The zirconium cladding vas removed by dissolution in hydrofluoric acid. An insoluble double salt of zirconium and thorium was converted to the hydroxide of zirconium and thorium with sodium hydroxide and then dissolved with fuming perchloric acid. The thorium core of the sample was dissolved in nitric acid catalyzed with hydrofluoric acid.
