This report describes the results of an investigation concerning the effects of heat exposure on portland cement concrete as related to its use in a prestressed-concrete-pressure-vessel reactor. Two structural grade concretes were exposed to temperatures up to 500 F both at atmospheric pressure and under saturated steam pressure. The concretes were then studied to establish the nature of changes which occurred in the compressive strength, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity as a result of the imposed test conditions. The effects of exposure to elevated temperatures on the mineralogical makeup and microstructure of the concretes were also studied.
