Work under contract to the Department of Health and Social Security is in progress at AWRE in which the electrochemical corrosion and the stress corrosion behaviour of metallic surgical implant materials is being evaluated. Emphasis has been placed on those metals which are most commonly used as implant materials, ie, an austenitic stainless steel containing molybdenum (EN58J), titanium and a cobalt-chromium-molybdenura alloy.nWork at AWRE reported by Bultitude and Morris [2] has shown that while very variable, and sometimes poor corrosion behaviour is shown by the austenitic steel (EN58J), both titanium and cobalt-chromium-molybdenum are very resistant to electrochemical corrosion in saline solutions.
