To achieve the burnup levels of 100,000 to 150,000 MWD/Tonne which will be needed for economical operation of large oxide-fueled fast breeder reactors, fuel rods having pellets with controlled amounts of porosity are required. Most commercial fuel pellet fabrication processes have been set up to produce high density pellets with only 4 to 8% porosity, whereas fast breeder pellets can require up to 15% porosity.
