A FORTRAN IV computer program was developed for the IBM 360 computer to solve a system of equations to simulate the hydrodynamic flow conditions in tubular systems (rectangular or circular) and to calculate relative water costs. The mathematical model includes the effect of concentration polarization and the dependence of membrane salt rejection on flux and salt concentration. Provisions have been made to simulate the hydrodynamic effect of turbulence promoters and to include allow¬ance for brine disposal costs in the economic model.nThe inlet velocity and pressure, water recovery, and flow geometry can be opti¬mized to calculate minimum water costs subject to inequality constraints on the independent variables. The optimized solution conforms to an upper limit placed on the product salt concentration and a lower limit on the Reynolds number.
