A model is presented for the elastic scattering of deuterons and alpha particles. The target is assumed to have collective states which are excited by nonspherical interactions with each nucleon of the projectile. Nonlocal potentials are derived, and the elastic-channel Schroedinger equations containing these potentials are solved numerically 58 for a Ni target. Inelastic effects are included for both projectiles, but contributions from stripping and breakup appear only in the deuteron case. Discussion is presented to compare this work with that of other authors and to explore possible modifications which would bring the pre dictions of this model into closer agreement with experimental data.
