The very low emission of photons created by passing a primary streamer is analyzed in the range 2100 to 4800 A. Essentially it reveals the excitation of the N sub 2 molecule. In addition to the transitions C exp 3 PI/sub mu / implies B exp 3 PI/sub g/ and B exp 2 sigma /sub mu / exp + implies X exp 2 sigma /sub g/ exp + observed for quite some time, we have revealed the population of the following electron states: D exp 3 sigma /sub mu / exp + , p' exp 1 sigma /sub mu / exp + , s' sigma /sub mu / exp + , h exp 1 sigma /sub mu / exp + , 1 exp 1 PI/sub mu /, b exp 2 PI/sub mu /, o exp 1 PI/sub mu /, and, with less certainty, the state y exp 1 PI/sub g/.
