PROPERTIES OF CARBON DERIVED FROM INDENE COMPOUNDS

Hydrocarbon compounds derived from indene were evaluated with respect to the properties of the carbon produced on heating to temperatures in the range from 700 to 2,800° C. These synthetic hydrocarbon compounds were polymerized by using oxidative, catalytic, and thermal methods of initiation. Polymer properties such as molecular distribution, molecular weight, vis¬cosity, and softening point were determined. Both monomer and polymer materials were carbonized in a nitrogen atmosphere to 700 - 1,000° C, and coke yields were determined. Carbon samples were subsequently fired to 1,600 - 2,800° C, and the carbon properties at the respective temperatures were determined. Methods used to evaluate the carbon samples included X-ray diffraction and metallography, and the observed carbon properties were correlated with properties previously determined for the precursor materials. These correlations suggest various approaches to the control of properties of carbon derived from snythetic precursor materials.
