All immature myctophids examined, adult Protomyctophum Thompson, P. crockery and some adult Tarletonbeania crenularis had thin-walled, gasfilled swimbladders which provide buoyancy. Adult Stenobrachius leucopsarus and S. nannochir had fat-invested swimbladders and adult Lampanyctus ratter and diphase theta had reduced swimbladders. Buoyancy was supplied by high body lipid content for these fishes without gas-filled swimbladders. Adults of T. crenularis and D. Theta had either gas-filled or atrophied swimbladders. Adult Lampanyctus regales had reduced swimbladders but low body lipids.
