摘要

Paper mill additives are necessary adjuncts to the manufacture of the many varieties of paper produced to meet diverse demands of the consumer. Important as these materials are in paper making, they may be potential contaminants when released to the environment. The additives may adversely affect the oxygen balance of effluent receiving waters, impart undesirable colors, tastes and odors or produce toxic effects. Added to these consideration are the economic losses which may be suffered by the paper manufacturer through incomplete utilization of the additives purchased at considerable cost.nIn order to better determine the amounts of additives being lost, understand the mechanics involved and develop possible countermeasures, it is necessary to have simple, rapid and reliable analytical techniques for studying the processes. Conventional chemical analytical techniques have several disadvantages, and nuclear analytical techniques appear to hold potential advantages over these chemical methods. The purpose of this study is to develop nuclear analytical techniques where needed for better controlling paper mill additives to prevent their release into the environment as pollutants.
