Present Status of the Analyses of the First and Second Spectra of Uranium (U I and U II) As Derived from Measurements of Optical Spectra

Most levels have experimental isotope shifts and g value data associated with them. In both U I and U II, only a very small fraction of the levels in any configuration have been found. Some theoretical calculations have been made on the energy-level structure of the low-lying configurations, and agreement is reasonably good for these levels. Those calculations lead to computed ionization potentials for U I and U II of 6.22 ± 0.5 and 10.6 ± 1 V, respectively. Only a small fraction of the total number of lines have been measured. Continued progress in the analysis depends on the acquisition of more high-precision experimental data.
