EFFECT OF ACUTE IRON TOXICITY ON THE INTEGRITY OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT

Few studies have been reported to elucidate the initial lesion produced in the intestine in acute iron toxicity. The following de¬scribes the result of function studies on the effect of iron toxicity on the gastrointestinal tissue. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (200 gms) were used for the in vivo and in situ experiments. Everted gut segments from rats were used for part of the in vitro studies while isolated chick intestinal cell suspension was used for the remainder. Three iron compounds were studied:ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate and ferrous fumarate. The LD50 's were as follows:ferrous sulfate, 246 mg Ee/kg;ferrous gluconate, 280 mg Fe/kg and ferrous fumarate >1 gm Fe/kg.
