Hydroforming Metal Foils

This paper describes the special technique required to deep draw thin metal foils, using the hydroform process (technically known as rubber-diaphragm forming). Molybdenum foil, 0.002 in. thick, and Mo-46 wt % Re alloy foil, 0.005 in. thick, were both hydroformed into hemispherical shells. The foil blanks were formed while sandwiched between two relatively thick mild steel blanks called waster sheets. The waster sheets were used only as an aid to the forming operation and were discarded afterwards.
