A Parameter Study of Spall Calculations in One-Dimensional Hydrodynamics Codes

Spall calculations were made using a pressure gradient spall model in the one-dimensional hydrodynamics codes CIRCE, COMBO, RICSHAW, and SIN. The system for which these calculations were carried out consisted of a 10 cm. slab of Composition B high explosive adjacent to a 2.54 cm. slab of aluminum. The results are presented in this paper, and it is shown that the calculated spall layers are not sensitive to noise in the rarefaction wave, but that variations in the spall constants can have a significant effect on the quantitative results obtained in the tension region of the aluminum.
