Totally Implantable artificial heart development appears technologically feasible. AEC-Westinghouse have designed a totallyHmplantable artificial heart. In order to establish the anatomical adequacy of this AEC-W unit, studies were performed in both 80 kg calves and human cadavers. Anatomy of body cavities available for the implantation of this device was examined not only by conventional methods but also by plastic molding technic (Silastic A RTV and polyurethane foam were selected as molding materials.) Special emphasis was placed on anatomy of vascular structures.nSpace within the pericardial sac proved to be enough for implantation of AEC-W blood pump;design of vascular connections must be carefully made. These vascular connections will differ for humans and experimental animals, but the same basic design can be utilized.
