摘要

This report deals with the geological and geophysical effects of the CANNIKIN underground nuclear shot which was detonated under Amchitka on November 6, 1971. Seismological data of the World Wide Standard Seismograph Network and the Canadian Network showed that the shot had a body wave magnitude of 7.0 (NOS determined 6.8 on the basis of WWSSN data) and a surface wave magnitude of 5.7. There is evidence which indicates tectonic strain may have been released at the time of the shot and at approximately 5-6 minutes following the shot. However, in both cases the seismic energy of the tectonic events was smaller than the seismic energy generated by the shot.
