New Developments in the Electrical Melting of Refractory Glasses

The principal characteristics of the new developments in electrical melting of glasses and refractory oxides are reported. All these developments have in common the fact that they are based on the interaction between a variable electromagnetic field and a material whose resistivity decreases as the temperature rises (in the case of the plasma torch, this material is an ionized gas). This theoretical oneness is less artificial than one might believe, because it was fundamental studies on induction plasmas which indeed made it possible to predict with certainty the electrothermal behavior of refractory oxides subjected to a variable electromagnetic field. The practical oneness of the new developments is due to the fact that they concern the glass and refractories industry, which turns out to be the first industry to benefit from these advanced technologies.
