A SIMPLE APPROACH TO LASER AMPLIFIERS

A mathematical description of a laser amplifier is presented in a simplified way. Since we assume no resonant gain pro¬cesses, we describe the gain by rate equations. We treat neither diffraction nor cross-relaxation. We analyze the transfer properties of the amplifier, and describe its effects on the spatial and temporal pulse shape. We show why operation at more than 5 or 10 times the saturation flux is undesirable un¬less the resulting pulse distortion can be accepted. This report is a consoli¬dation and review of known results, and a study of their implications for laser amplifier design.
