This is Interim Technical Summary Report Number Four covering work per formed under an agreement with the U. S. Army (Fort Belvoir) during the period November 23, 1970, through May 22, 1971, to construct lithium/chalcogen secondary cells for components in electric vehicular propulsion generating systems. The ultimate goal of the program is the construction of high-specific-power, multikilowatt, lithium/chalcogen batteries to provide acceleration and hill climbing power for electrically driven Army vehicles. The present effort is directed toward testing liquid- or paste-electrolyte cells, approximately 7.5-cm diameter, capable of delivering (a) short-time peak power densities of 1 to 3 W/cm2, (b) energy densities of 0.5 W-hr/cm2 at the 1-hour discharge rate (0.27 A/cm2) to a 1.0 V cutoff and 40% utilization of the theoretical capacity, (c) lifetimes of 1000 to 2000 hours, and (d) cycle lives of 500 to 1000 charge-discharge cycles. These cells will eventually be used in fabricating a 1-kW battery.
