ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY AND MECHANICAL PROPERTY MEASUREMENTS ON A COLD WORKED AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL

Measurements were made on a sheet of well documented 316 stainless steel in order to determine the effects of cold working upon the elec¬trical conductivity and mechanical properties of the material. The sheet was cut into smaller sheets, and these were cold rolled in incre¬ments of approximately 10% from 0% to 50%. Mechanical property measure¬ments were then made on these plates both parallel and perpendicular to the rolling direction. A computer controlled testing machine system was utilized for most of these tests, which allowed determination of mechanical property results to an overall accuracy of at least 1-2%. Electrical conductivity measurements were made by two techniques:the first was the time honored one of D.C. measurements which were made on the mechanical property test specimens prior to testing, and the second was the relatively new method of non-destructive measurement by eddy current methods.
