The term "fast fracture" describes a fracture which occurs suddenly, without warning, and propagates rapidly to a point where the integrity of the structure may be completely Impaired and (frequently) to the point of complete separation.nThe discipline for understanding "fast fracture" is referred to an "fracture mechanics." A basic assumption in employing fracture mechanics is that a crack or crack-like defect can exist in a structure. Fracture mechanics describes the failure of a structure in terms of nominal parameters, such as gross stress, crack dimensions and material properties.
