Albedo-neutron dosimeters are being considered as a replacement for the NTA film badge and for measuring the neutron dose from intermediate- and low-energy fast neutrons. Factors affecting the design of an albedo-neutron dosimetry system using 6Li and 7Li thermoluminescent dosimeters were studied. These factors include energy dependence, sensitivity, orientation with respect to the body, dosimeter-to-body distance, source-to-dosimeter distance, and the presence of shielding materials between the source and the dosimeter.nThe study did not involve a specific dosimeter design, so the data obtained can be used for most albedo dosimeters. Design variables included incorporation of several thicknesses of polyethylene in the dosimeter, location of the thermal neutron detectors at nine different positions in or on the dosimeter, and use of differing diameters and thicknesses of cadmium shields in the dosimeters.
