The effect of composition on the one-hour recrystallization temperature of 20% cold worked Type 316 stainless steel was determined by using hardness measurements. The studies were performed on 45 different alloys, based on Type 316 stainless steel;compositional variations were in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, boron, manganese, copper, silicon, molybdenum, cobalt, chromium, and nickel.nOver certain composition limits for a single alloy element it was found that the recrystallization temperature varied linearly with composition. Assuming no interaction parameters the recrystallization temperature can be calculated by a simple summation. A multiple linear regression computer code yields the following equation :nRecrystallization temperature = 1S83CF +1396 (%Carbon) + 19.2 (% Molybdenum) + 3S846 (% Boron)-8.6 (%'Chromium) + 240 (% nitrogen).nUtilizing this equation and the composition limits set in RDT Standard E 13-8, the one hour recrystallation temperature of 20% cold worked cladding can range from a low of 1S20°F to a high of 1620°F.
