To achieve these goals, SLAC invited both theoretical and experimental physicists to join a program combining summer school and topical conference for¬mats. Two consecutive ten-day periods were scheduled, each consisting of a one week school of highly pedagogic nature followed by an intense 2-1/ 2 day topical Conference in which experts in the field described their current work. The topics for this first school, deep inelastic lepton scattering and the weak interactions, were chosen as being particularly exciting and timely subjects.
